If you live in the UK - take a look at the Outside In Organisation to arrange author or illustrator visits as part of their Reading Around the World initiative.
If you live in NZ or Australia: Small World Books aims to bring books from around the world into children's hands and minds - stimulating their imaginations, providing creative opportunities while generating cross-cultural awareness and debate.
The Small World workshops as a whole are about giving children the opportunity to experience and explore books from around the world. Such books are rarely made available to any child (less than 5% of children's books published in the UK were originally written in another language other than English).
Our self-contained workshops will involve and enthuse children and young people (and the professionals who work with them) about stories from other countries and provide an exciting and highly interactive forum for children to discover and explore the diversity of translated children's literature - using My Village as a platform.
Children will have an interactive session learning about illustration with an art/craft activity, creative writing with a language activity, developing an awareness of books from other countries and explore cultural, personal and local identities, while recognising that language can be beautiful and interesting even if the words cannot be understood.
The workshops are carefully designed to be fun and activity based, as well as educational and thought provoking.
The age group is from 7 - 9 year olds and can be adapted to suit class requirements and size.
If you are interested in booking a workshop in New Zealand, please contact Small World Books at hello@itsasmallworld.co.nz - Thanks!
We also do readings of the poems in original language and English for libraries and bookshops, as well as talks to primary school groups about international books, the process of publishing a book and the way the artwork is put together - great for book week. We particularly like talking to the junior school, they ask the most fun questions!!
