Nursery Rhymes for Indie Kids

'Kindie' - a cross between Kids' and indie (as in: 'independent music' genre) is taking British pre-schoolers by storm with sell-out 'gigs' across the country. It seems that parents are increasingly looking for nursery rhymes, or pre-school songs, that more closely resemble the music they like! Neal Whitmore's (ex- Sigue Sigue Sputnik) new music aimed at pre-schoolers under the band name Green Means Go, is following in the footsteps of American Dan Zanes' (ex- Del Fuegos) successful conquering of the Playhouse Disney Channel. Read the full story here And how about these nursery rhymes sung like you've never heard before: Old McDonald's Farm by Pearl Jam, Itsy Bitsy Spider by Coldplay and 3 Blind Mice by Alanis Morisette - click here.

"You might tell the compiler of My Village that I regularly visit an elderly couple, both born in The Netherlands. She is 80, and he is 89 and dying of stomach cancer. This afternoon, I told them about the Kortjakje [shortjacket] rhyme on page 46 (of My Village). They both knew it and sang it for me. It goes to the tune of Twinkle twinkle little star. It was a lovely moment for all of us." Trevor, Christchurch, New Zealand

"What a great journey you have been on . . . such a lot of effort into creating a wonderful and interesting nursery rhyme book for (your son) - and for countless other lucky little people. Nursery rhymes are great for kids, something about the rhyming makes it much easier for them to remember and captures their interest and imagination. So, well done on making this idea of yours happen, and for providing a lovely book that will no doubt bring great joy to many children, as well as their reading parents and grandparents." Sandra Turner, Milford

Thanks Trevor and Sandra, lovely comments!

Join Our Book Crossing Experiment

A cross between a treasure hunt and a message in a bottle! Small World Books is "setting free" its book, My Village: Rhymes from Around the World and you can be part of the experiment. Teachers just buy one book from this site and email me to let me know you'd like it to be part of the BookCrossing experiment. I will send you a copy that has been stickered and logged in to the system. Then your class can follow the progress of the book as it is set free across the world. Finders of the book will log in and leave a message before setting the book free again - if you're lucky it might return to you! Parents can do the same thing. It's a fun way to get your kids excited about books and world geography. The first My Village book cross started in Auckland, New Zealand and is currently in Greenwich, Connecticut!

BookCrossing is free to join and safe for kids. BookCross because books change people . . . and people change the world.
